Troy – Top 2000 Blog Party – Day 6

I decided to discontinue the line I was following and post my entry in time this day. I also got away from the space theme. It’s devastating fire now. And a firebird rising from the flames. Yes, I’m talking Sinéad O’Connor. Illustrating this song has been on my wishlist for years now, but I never felt comfortable doing it until now. And I’m not even disappointed with the outcome.

Phoenix
Oh and I am doing good things at the end of the year. After about six years, I finally started using my Wacom Bamboo drawing tablet. Yay me. I have no idea why it took me so long, because now I wish I did it way sooner. It’s such a time saver if you do intense editing. Last night’s illustration took way too much time to turn into a digital clip art file. And that was quite a simple design to separate from it’s background. So when I started this phoenix today, I knew I had to start using the Wacom. It was a joy.
By the time I was ready to start painting the background on my page, Sinéad’s song had been on the radio, so I could feel the mood of the song, which resulted in quite a heavy image. Well, it is a heavy song. A very beautiful song, but also with a lot of anger in it. The part where she kind of promises she’ll rise from the flames (after she died killing a dragon), really spoke to me.

Troy
The fire is one big disaster and it looks hurtful, but look at that Phoenix. It’s very, very strong and very determined. Whatever the fire in your life may be, be that Phoenix!

Fly Me To The Moon – Top 2000 Blog Party – Day 5

Oh no! I’m late again! I’m starting to see a pattern here. Not one I like though. Talking about repetitions, there seems to be a theme going on these past few days. Three days in a row my page has a moon scenery. And the moon’s getting bigger every day. I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

Fly_Me_To_The_Moon

When I first thought my page was finished, I wasn’t too happy with it. Then I started doodling the white stars and it made such a difference. It gave dept, contrast, balance and it was just the thing I needed to connect the elements. To add even more fun, I also added some white dots in small clusters. Now I am really happy with it. Sometimes when you’re not happy with the result, it just needs a little more.

Again I started with an illustration. I like to continue that for this year’s Top 2000 pages. I wish I started this the very first day. Well, can’t go back, so let’s just embrace that imperfection. They’re all in a special Top 2000 journal, so the pages from last year are also in ther  and there will be many more in the future. But for now, I like to continue this way of working.
Rocket
Only two days left. The list has come to the point where it’s an ongoing bliss of the greatest songs of all kind. Pop, rock, ballads, hiphop… it’s all there.

Memory – Top 2000 Blog Party – Day 4

I’m late! Completely following my personal style. Le sigh. Yesterday I managed it just in time. Today I didn’t. I have to admit, I was in big doubt weather I wanted to do a page today at all. Hence the delayed time I started drawing and painting. I felt so tired at 7:30 PM, I seriously debated weather to call it a day and go to bed. Apparently all I needed was a cup of hot chocolate.

Today I chose the song “Memory” by Barbara Streisand. It made me think of the musical cats, which isn’t too weird since that’s where the song originates. I remember how the old cat sang the song and even though I haven’t seen the (movie of) the musical for a very long time, this song stills brings me in tears.

So I started with a drawing of a sad old cat.
Sad_cat

After scanning, digitalising and printing the cat, I painted a night scene. Of course it had to have a big moon. I glued the cat image to the page and wrote down part of the lyrics.

Memory

I have to admit, this isn’t my best page. I do like the sad cat though. I think I would’ve liked it better when the cat was closer by. Speaking photography terms, I think it would have been better if the whole scene was more zoomed in. Can’t change that now, so I call it done.

Tomorrow a new page. Or so I think.

Moondance – Top 2000 Blog Party – Day 3

Today has almost come to an end, but I do keep my promise. I’m here with a new artwork and a new blogpost. I don’t really have a lot to talk about, so I’ll keep it short and show you what I made.

Moondance

I really love making my own clip art to use in my art journals. It’s quite a lot of work to build my pages this way and quite time consuming, but I love the look. Plus I can use the same image over and over again or send it out in happy mail swaps.
Alright. On to the next song. Maybe picking a song is taking most time at the moment. There’s so much to choose from. I found out the best songs aren’t necessarily the best to illustrate.

A 15 Minutes Page And A Colourful Owl

Hello friends! I hope you are having a great weekend. Yesterday was a bit of an off-day for me, but today I feel good. And I’m determined to finally give my project Midori a new try. I’ve watched a ton of videos on YouTube and I think I’m ready. Before I head to my art room, I would like to share some art journal pages with you. I’ve mentioned the #sisterswithheartinart project on Instagram before and both these pages were made after their new prompts.

The first one was to make an entire page in 15 minutes. I am a slow worker, so this really was a challenge for me. I decided to use my A6 size journal, so my pages would be small enough to fill in an hour. I spread some paint with baby wipes. I love using them to layer a first coat of paint on my paper. You need a small amount of paint and the moist wipes makes it easy to spread the paint in a thin layer. It also works great for blending, which I did with a second colour. I started with bright yellow and added some orange from the edges towards the center. Thin layers speed up drying time, which is very usefull when only having 15 minutes to make a page. I used a stencil by The Crafters Workshop together with a make-up sponge and a red acrylic paint. At this point, I layed my journal aside to dry and moved on with the focal image. I drew a bunch of whimsical animals in Juliette Crane’s online workshop, which I scanned into my computer and printed out a several times, so I always have them at hand when I want to use them. They’re kind of my home made digital stamps now. I chose one of the animals and coloured it in with coloured pencils (Koh-i-Nor, not the best quality, but a good alternative when you can’t affor the fancy pencils by Prisma or Derwent). Usually I take my time for colouring, but time was not my friend with this project. Only 5 minutes to go. I quickly layered some colours on top of each other. Only 30 seconds to cut and adhere. I like to be very precise when I fussy cut an image, but there was no time for that, so I quickly cut around the image, leaving a small white border. I adhered it to the page using a glue stick. Times up! So…I cheated a bit and took another 30 seconds to write down some journaling.

I have to say this prompt was very educative for me. Normally I tend to overthink everything too much and you don’t have time for that with this prompt. I think it’s a good exercise for us overthinkers to practise every once and a while.

15_Minutes

Another week’s prompt was to create a cartoonish owl. Those of you who know me for a while, know I am a big owl lover. No surprise I was very happy with this prompt. As a warm up, I started sketching some owls in my sketchbook.

owls-sketch

I chose the top right owl for my project and decided to work in my watercolour journal. I made this journal as an insert for my Midori style Travelers Notebook, that I have yet to make. It’s A5 size. I had a lot of fun mixing and blending all the colours, even though my skills are pretty lousy. Well, you need to practice to get better, right. I used Van Gogh watercolours, which is a student grade. I won’t buy any fancy watercolours until my skills have improved enough to be worth artist grade paints. Sometimes I do treat myself to a new colour, but always the student grade. I must say these Van Gogh watercolours are pretty good quality.

When I was done painting and let the page dry overnight, I started to add some texture to the owl with some coloured pencils. Also I went over the lines with a black brush pen (Faber Castel) and gave him eyelids with a small tip fineliner (Micron). It looked nice, but it was too clean to my liking, so I added a couple of background stamps with Archival ink. Finally I marked a small border with a black inktense pencil and called it done.

Owl

I hope you enjoyed today’s post and see you back next time. Have a great day!

*IF - Swarm

Finally another entry for Illustration Friday. Right, it’s actually Thursday already, but that shouldn’t spoil all the fun. The theme was “swarm” and I believe this really is a mini-swarm of bees.

Bad Halloween Dream

Gorjuss-Halloween-eyes

There are these celebrations that some like and some don’t. Sometimes it even seems like the whole world likes a feast, except you. Halloween is to be concidered as one of those, if you’d ask me. Appearantly it must be kind of fun or something, but I really don’t like it even a tiny bit. And still I can’t hide and ignore this theme.

Halloween

As for Illustration Friday this week’s theme was “Spooky”. I decided to keep it small in all ways and made a spooky ATC. And alright, as ATC’s usually like some company I made an owl at night as well. Daniëlle, thanks a bunch for this sweet owl-stamp present (together with the funny cat, which will appear later this year in different ways). This stamp really suits me! This way I’ve been able to add this challenge to my hand.

Gorjuss-Halloween

Then there is the challenge at DDCC for next two weeks going by the theme “Halloween”. Something with the colours purple and orange is allowed too. Fortunately a Gothic girl always like a bit of scarryness, so the choice to use this Gorjuss Girl was made in a sec. Spider added to it and start frightening. Oh well, to this girl, the spider is probably one of her most favourite animals. So do you join this challenge again? At the DDCC-blog you will find more scarry examples, so have a look if you dare… mwuhahahahaha….

Mini Canvas

Always-Something

Art in pocketsize! However this canvas only measures about 2x2 inch, it still stands on it’s own easel. A size this small seemed a nice take-off point to try something new: collage-art. I used to panic even when someone just mentioned the word collage-art, let alone I started practioning it myself. Apparently that scrapping works through other creative forms too :)

On A Starry Night

If the night is bright and the stars are twinkeling pretty in the sky, Bear likes to go outside watching them. Bear really likes stars. Sometimes the stars together make a shape. His most favourite are Little Bear and Big Bear. What Bear likes most are the falling stars. Because if you see one of those, you can make a wish.

mixed media on canvas

Owls and wisdom are in symbolism close tied together, but if you see a baby owl, you wouldn't say this will grow up into such an impressive and wise bird...

Appaloosa

A girl by the age of 10 asked me to draw her a horse, in case I had nothing to do ;) It was supposed to be a white horse with brown spots. Now this girl isn't just any girl. For this girl there is nothing in the whole world that could ever be more valueable than a horse. So she's the prof... and I'm not. Her biggest love just had to be put down on paper with the most possible care and security and that was quite a hard thing to do. Immediately I stumbled over my big lack of knowledge ... what kind of horse was this girl talking about? Weeks on end I surfed the internet. Tens of images came out of my printer. Eventually I sorta asked again. As to her mum said it had to be an Appaloosa. This was something at least google knew what to do with. Even more images came out of my printer. Followed by many many sketsches. Eventually I chose this horsehead. I hope she likes it.

Small up-date: The girl hasn't seen it yet, but her mum fell totally in love with it!

last update: the girl was so very happy with it. I got a super enthousiastic sms and it wasn't hard for me to imagine how happy she must have looked like...

IF - Sour

Grumpy Cub

"I can't hear no more," the cub said. "Always too small for this, too young for that ... I've had it. I want to live on my own. I'm moving ... well ... at least to the next rock ... for a short while I suppose ... until mum's calling me for lunch ..."

Finally I mannaged to actually finish my contribution to IF before deadline. Weeee. At last ... I'm back in ... Hello world! :-)
